Outdoor fittings face rain, dust and heat that indoor bulbs never see, so the rating on the box matters more than the brightness.
Look for IP65 or better on anything mounted outside — that means fully dust-tight and able to take a jet of water, which covers the monsoon. Mount the fitting at least eight feet up so the glare sits above eye level, and angle it slightly downward so light lands on the ground instead of spilling into a neighbour’s window.
For a shopfront, 2000–3000 lumens covers a typical frontage. A courtyard needs less — around 1200 lumens spread across two fittings reads better than one harsh floodlight.
